Terex SHM Training Program Wins First Place
Sutton, an agent with West Virginia University’s Mining Extension Service, teamed up with Terex SHM’s computer operations manager, Ron Furrow, to develop a 40-hour instructional program to train highwall miners. A key component of the program is a mining simulator, which was donated by Terex SHM to the University’s Mining Extension Service. Sutton and Furrow worked on the project for over six months, with Sutton creating the training manuals and materials, and Furrow handling the programming and technical side. The result was unveiled in October at a national instructional conference where it won first place in the “Academia Coal Mining” category. Recognition comes in many forms—a bonus, a pat on the back or a word of thanks—and is always welcome, regardless of the source. Peer recognition, however, is particularly satisfying. That’s why Ireland Sutton was so pleased when his “Highwall Simulator Training Program” received the award for “Best New Training Program” at a recent TRAM (Training Resources Applied to Mining) conference.
