Mining: TEREX SHM

Terex SHM No. 51 Yields Exceptional Results

Surface Coal Mining- Terex SHM 51The first highwall miner using Terex SHM's new S 7 operator control system —the Terex SHM No. 51—went online last December. The S 7 system contains more advanced diagnostics than Terex SHM’s original operating system which increases availability; it is also more operator friendly and communicates faster, so it functions more efficiently. The results have been exceptional.

Operated by Twin State Mining, LLC, in McDowell County, West Virginia, Terex SHM No. 51 has been successfully mining the high quality metallurgical Pocahontas no. 4 coal seam, in two different pits. In the first pit, the no. 4 seam was 9 feet high but involved tough mining conditions due to the no. 5 seam above and the no. 3 seam below being previously mined. Operating with a Joy 14CM15 cutterhead the highwall miner crews have produced over 7,800 tons a day in these tough mining conditions. Moving over to the second surface mining pit, the mining conditions remained tough, but the no. 4 coal seam runs much lower in the 50 to 60 inch range. Here the decision was made to mine with the Terex SHM low seam cutterhead where production often reaches from 3,500 to 4,000 tons per day.

Dwight Raines, which manages the Twin State Mining operation has a long history of success with Terex SHM. Building on those achievements with dedicated highwall miner crews, Twin State Mining will be taking delivery of a second Terex SHM miner in late May and expectations are very good for a third miner in late 2007.
